How to Spot and Fix a Warped Skateboard Deck (And How to Hang It Correctly)

A warped skateboard deck caused by desert climate fresh out of the plastic

If you’ve been around skateboards long enough, you’ve seen warped decks.

When going to the skate shop we’ve spent the last 40 years checking decks for warp before buying them. In dry climates like South Jordan, Utah, wood movement is just part of life. Between desert humidity swings, pressure from bad storage, and decks stacked on the floor, warping can happen faster than most people realize.

If you’re collecting decks or displaying them as art, this matters.

A warped deck doesn’t just look wrong. Over time the twist can get worse if the board is stored or mounted incorrectly.

In this Field Notes post we’ll cover:

  • How to spot a warped skateboard deck

  • What you can do to fix or reduce the warp

  • Why most skateboard wall mounts actually make warp worse

  • Why Board Block helps prevent it

Because if you're putting a deck on the wall, it should stay there for years — not weeks.

This is art.

How to Spot a Warped Skateboard Deck

Warp isn't always obvious at first glance. The easiest way to check is with a simple visual test.

Method 1: The Floor Test

Place the deck on a flat surface and get down to eye level with it.

Look along the length of the board. If the nose or tail lifts unevenly, or if the board appears twisted like a propeller, you’ve got warp.

You can see the slight twist when comparing the level tail with the unlevel nose.

Method 2: The Stack Test

Another trick we’ve used for decades in skate shops is stacking decks.

Lay a few decks together and look across the stack. If one board lifts or separates from the others, that board likely has a twist or warp.

You can see the twist on a couple decks when they lay flat and stacked like this

What Causes Skateboard Decks to Warp

Even though skateboard decks are pressed from multiple layers of maple, wood still moves.

Common causes include:

  • Improper storage

  • Pressure from stacking decks

  • Humidity swings

  • Leaning boards against walls

  • Two-point hanging systems

Warp usually starts slowly and gets worse over time if the board is under uneven pressure.

Can a Warped Skateboard Deck Be Fixed?

Sometimes — yes.

Warp caused by pressure or uneven storage can often be reduced.

The key is applying even pressure in the opposite direction and letting the wood slowly settle back.

The Repair Process

Before

During

Here's what I am doing:

  • Scrap 2x4's being used on a level surface to create an even surface to conform to

  • Applied a little weight to counter the twisting on the deck and I will leave it for 24-48 hours

After

Much straighter and ready to hang to stop further twisting!

The Biggest Mistake People Make When Hanging Decks

Many skateboard wall hangers use two prongs that go into the truck holes.

While these look simple, they can actually make warp worse.

Why?

Because they create two pressure points on the deck.

If the board already has any twist, hanging it from two prongs can exaggerate that twist and make the deck look even more distorted.

Over time, that uneven load can even create new warp.

Why Board Block Prevents Deck Warp

Board Block was designed differently.

Instead of hanging from prongs, the deck makes solid contact with the mount.

That means:

  • two stable contact points

  • solid connection between deck, mount, and wall

  • even support across the deck

This prevents the board from twisting further while it's displayed.

The result:

Your deck stays in the shape it was meant to have.

And it looks like what it actually is.

Art.

Final Thoughts

A skateboard deck deserves better than being stacked on the floor or hung from two pieces of metal.

If you're displaying decks, you're preserving them.

That means:

  • checking for warp

  • correcting it if possible

  • mounting the deck in a way that prevents future twisting

Because when a deck goes on the wall, it should stay there for years.

Not weeks.
